Are you a Multi - preneur?
At a networking event that I attended last week I spoke with a gentleman who was interested in changing the scope of his existing business. During the course of our conversation I mentioned a few pans that I have in the fire, and how I am able to have my primary business (Sidewalk Designs), but also several secondary endeavors (one of which is the longislandbiz2biz.com). I explained that I did not feel the need to abandon my primary business, which is thriving, in order to branch out with these other things. He said "Oh! You have tried alot of things."

At first I was a little irritated because I felt he meant that somehow because I hadnt settled on one thing I was "unsettled". I think that's a perception that many have for those of us "multipreneurs".

I've never been able to do just one thing! I need to be juggling and multi-tasking to feel alive! I used to think it was because I'm a woman and a mother. But over time I've met a good deal of men in my boat. Now I think it's the creative blood in me that drives me to have to have a hand in many things at once. By creating multiple profit centers and staggering how and when you work on them, you will leave no room for boredom or routine.

The people I refer to as "creative multipreneurs" are happiest when exploring their many passions and prefer to pursue multiple careers. They are never happy with just one. With the joy of chasing these exciting dust bunnies in life, there are also some less than joyous moments - the following are a few tips that may help you in your pursuit of your multi - dreams.

1. Time on my side...
Many multipreneurs find themselves "jack of all trades - master of none" and this is most often the result of an inability to prioritize their multiple endeavors. Especially creative people tend to gravitate to the project that will give them the most enjoyment, putting the less exciting (but more important or timely) projects aside. If you want to be a successfull mulitpreneur you must have the self control to budget your time and focus first on the real "money maker" projects first and only when they are satisfied can you switch gears and do the fun stuff.

2. Who you know....
Consent seems an odd choice of words, I mean, we're all adults here, right? But no man (or woman) is an island and our relationships with family, spouses, friends, and even colleagues impact us every day whether we like to acknowledge it or not. If you're lucky, your relationships are positive and supportive. But if you are in relationships that are not so supportive it can really effect your outcome whether you see it happening or not. Many people hate change, and they may not want you to change, either.

Figure out who really supports you. Try to spend time only with supportive "cheer leaders" if you can. If you can't avoid your dream "dashers" - find new supporters and keep moving forward.

3.The job Security myth...
There are tons of people who wish they could be self-employed. But they stay in their miserable, soul-sucking 9 to 5 cubicle jobs for one reason or another. For some it's the health insurance benefits, others think it's "job security". But is there ever really job security? I feel any job gives you a false sense of security. You never know when you could lose your job - so it's no more secure to be working for someone than being on your own. Just as you don't know if the company you work for is strong, you don't know where the next new project will come from.

4.Paralysis of analysis...
Many people who are planning to take on a new project or branch out in a different direction get caught in what I refer to as the paralysis of analysis. We creative folks love the planning phase best and are not so crazy about the day to day routine of doing the thing once we get under way. There is a point where you know what you need to do and it is time to get down to work.

5. I also do pottery and I write childrens book, oh and ...
Here is the single most difficult part of being a multipreneur. Sensoring yourself. Yes, you heard right. I encounter this quite a lot in networking meetings where you have just a few minutes to tell about yourself and "what you do". I find the best way to address this is to focus on the ONE thing that is the big profit center. Sell that and one thing once you have created a strong relationship, then you can mention your other endeavors. Unfortunately there is still the perception by many people that being into a lot of different things at one time makes you somehow "less" responsible. In fact it's just the opposite, it is those of us with "MORE" to offer who are the multipreneurs... go figure.
